Every mother is blessed because having a child is an eternal blessing. But beyond whatever our culture’s view is of motherhood, as a Christians I stand on eternal truth when we say that motherhood is a gift. Furthermore, one of God’s greatest gifts is motherhood, which benefits both the mother and the child. It is clear that it is a present for the child. Without its mother, the infant would not only be without an existence, but also without the physical and emotional nourishment that mothers give. How can one become truly themselves if they don’t feel they are loved? A child becomes a beast without love, and only a miracle can restore that child’s capacity for love. But being a mother also helps a person become more of who they are. The mother is able to love unconditionally and to place the child first in her list of priorities because of the anguish of giving birth and the joys and pains of raising a child.

Moreover, despite of the struggles and challenges faced by a mother, she thinks she is the one who is serving, but she is actually the one who is being served as God uses motherhood to make us more like His Son. Our nurturing work done unto Christ is part and parcel of the new creation, an invisible kingdom that is growing like a mustard seed in a garden and spreading throughout the world like leaven through dough. Motherhood is a gift that keeps on giving. Each day (and night) bring even more ways that we get to live out his big story, the story that says: Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. (2 Cor. 5:17)
