Artist Statement:

Filipino women. When we think of them, our first thought would be Maria Clara from Jose Rizal’s novel Noli Me Tangere. Filipinos would incorporate Maria Clara as a symbol for Filipino women -demure and self-effacing. But in this painting, we will see Maria Clara as a daughter from a loving family whose parents wants their child to see the world beautifully. In the story of Noli Me Tangere, Maria Clara is the daughter of Kapitan Tiyago and Doña Pia. They treat Maria Clara as their most precious possession. They treat her with utmost care just as other Filipino families. Like the others, we can observe that daughters are treated more carefully and protectively. We can associate this as Filipino’s one of its family traits -as their culture. Even before the past centuries, this is what a Filipino family looks like.
